For your final you will create a cover for a magazine. The cover may mimic or be a parody of an exisiting publication, or you can create a fictitious one of your own. Using your own original graphic and developing a concept around it is highly encouraged. Please see the student examples. This is your chance to show me what you have learned during the course of the class!

Homework #12 – Masks Continued

Assignment:
Using the techniques demonstrated in this weeks ‘One on One’ text tutorials create a composite graphic using the text’s graphics or your own. You need to use only two source graphics (the background and the masked graphic that you composite).

Homework #11 – Plug-Ins

Assignment:
1. Try installing a plug from the internet. You may use the ones from Adobe that I demonstrated in the videos, or any plugin of your choice.

2. Demonstrate the plugin by creating a graphic using the plugin.

Homework #10 – Working w/ the Pen Tool

Assignment:
Use a combination of bitmap graphics such as; photographs, scanned drawings, scanned small objects… and the pen tool to create a surreal image. Remember an important component in surreal imagry is a fantastical juxtaposition of subject matter. For example, a cow with wings flying over the moon, an airplane flying over a toaster…

Homework #5 – Working w/ Masks

Assignment:
Select a an image of your choice to practise making a mask using the above technique. You will find that the above technique does not apply to all types of photographs, so try various photos if need be. Pick a figure, or an object to mask that doesn’t have too much detail and is a bold shape. It is more important for you to experiment with the concepts than perfect a mask at this stage.

Midterm #1 – Grid Use in Typographic Layout

Assignment:
Choose a historical event or thing for your collage such as a milestone event in history; Civil Rights Movement, the struggle of the Suffragettes, invention of the car, or moveable type…
OR
Choose a historical figure – this person must not be alive! You could choose an artist, a writer, a politican, an actor, an explorer, a scientist, a saint, a revolutionairy…anyone in history!

Homework #6 – Typography Graphic

Assignment:
Choose one typeface and one piece of text {haiku, part of a poem, lyrics, quote from a person, quote from a newspaper article or your own poem…} that will set the tone and theme for this graphic.

Use one background graphic, or create a composited image that supports and works with your text. Prepare your background using image editing skills we have previously covered. You may use original photographs, stock photography, a web graphic (provide a credit if you do).

Work to integrate your text as a graphical element within the imagry. Establish a focal point in your graphic, and apply appropriate tracking, leading and choose a typeface and type treatment that aptly conveys your message. You may include a title for your text and who wrote it, or give credit in the email when you submit it.

Homework #4 – Color Your Way Perfect

Assignment:
Work with your levels, hue & saturation, match color (p. 130) and the other tools reviewed in the tutorials to correct colors and enhance the imagry. Work using use multiple layers, and blending layers with the layer opacity and layer effects. Pay close attention to developing an intentional color scheme. Use at least two sources of imagery.

You may choose to use cool colors (green, blue) or warm colors (red, orange, gold). You may choose to use a color palette that is analogous, or you could choose a complimentary color scheme.

Homework #3 – Duotone

Assignment:
Using at least two sources of photographic imagery, and the compositing techniques that you learned by using Photoshop’s Selection tools in lesson 2, cut out part(s) of one photograph and merge with another. Make sure your composite has clean edges, and is scaled appropriately, and that you save your file as a .psd (photoshop file) as you work. Edit your image (composite, crop, size, adjust levels, and perform other image correction techniques covered in this weeks tutorials…) before going to step 2. Work with an image approximately 5×7, or no larger than 8×10.
